Star Trek: Voyager — The Nanotech War
{4.5/5} “It dawned on Tom that whenever the Chiar underwent an emotional shift, their scent changed as well… Nylo… had also felt something when Zedrel had announced that Tom was going to be Zedrel’s attendant. Was it anger? Jealousy? Relief? Tom didn’t know. But ability to smell his captors’ emotions had to be an advantage. Now he just had to figure out how to use it.”
Star Trek: Voyager — The Nanotech War by Steven Piziks, published in 2002
Voyager rescues a small ship in distress in an ion storm. Captain Janeway discovers that Zedrel is the first person of his species to go to warp. In return for towing him home, Zedrel promises Voyager can make repairs at their space station. When they get to Chi, Harry discovers that one of its four continents is opaque to their sensors — and they have rhometric weapons, which are very dangerous.
This novel is about dealing with a society that’s recently been at war and has slaves. It’s about what happens when you lose your memory, and what happens when you rely so much on technology that you don’t know how to do things without it.
Fans of Seven and Tom will want to read this book.
This is the 2nd book I’ve read by Piziks. I previously read his great Battlestar Galactica novel, Unity — written under the name Steven Harper.
