Eden

{4.5/5} “I am the embodiment of perfection.”

Eden, released in 2024

After World War I, Ritter and Dore move from Germany to an island in the Galapagos, to work on a new philosophy. Ritter writes letters which are published in Germany, and other people come to the island — although Ritter doesn’t particularly want them to. Heinz is the first — he brings his wife and his son, who is not well. Life on the island is tough, but Ritter and Dore have made the best of it. Then a baroness arrives.

It’s about people living in a nice-looking but difficult place, trying to survive and perhaps thrive — some of whom are prepared to work against the others.

It’s about people who are ruthless, in various ways.

It has a bit of a Mosquito Coast flavour to it.

It’s based on a true story, although — as the movie points out at the end — the people who wrote about it disagreed about what happened.

Stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, and Sydney Sweeney. Directed by Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code).
