Star Trek: Discovery — Die Standing
{4.5/5} “The people of this continuum were different from the residents of hers; many, she still thought, were much inferior. But a current of hope ran through this universe, encouraging lightweights to seek responsibility — and giving those with dark pasts a shot at something other than incarceration.”
Star Trek: Discovery — Die Standing by John Jackson Miller, published in 2020
When Philippa Georgiou is a lieutenant she goes on a rescue mission but it turns out everyone’s already dead — but she does make a friend that day.
Years later in the Mirror Universe, Emperor Georgiou is on her way to obtain a weapon before anyone else can get their hands on it. She’ll eliminate anyone in her way, even people who are trying to get out of the way. Someone from her past scuttles her opportunity by blowing up the ship that the weapon is on. She suspects Gabriel Lorca’s hand in it.
This book is for fans of Philippa Georgiou, specifically Emperor Georgiou who later comes into the prime universe. Most of the book takes place when she’s ostensibly working for Section 31.
Other characters who show up include Emony Dax, Admiral Cornwell, and Sean Finnegan.
The story intersects in an interesting way with the TOS episode “Obsession.”
It’s about figuring out what to do with your life when you’re forced to do something new.
One more quotation: “People never really leave the captain’s chair; they travel with their own.”
This the 8th book I’ve read by Miller. I previously reviewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — The High Country.
