Star Trek Destiny: Gods of Night
{4.5/5} “Transphasic warheads were quickly proving to be the best defense against the renewed Borg onslaught. The admiralty, however, remained concerned that the Borg would eventually adapt to this seemingly unstoppable weapon, thereby robbing Starfleet of its last effective defense. Consequently, the Enterprise was the only ship in Starfleet that was armed with the warheads. That meant it was up to its crew to find out how the Borg were bypassing the Federation’s defenses — and to do so while there was still a Federation left to defend.”
Star Trek Destiny: Gods of Night by David Mack, published in 2008
When Captain Benjamin Sisko finds the wreck of the Columbia from 200 years ago on a planet in the Gamma Quadrant, he wonders what happened to the crew.
Years later, after the Dominion War, Captain Ezri Dax on the Aventine returns to the Columbia to examine it more thoroughly. The Borg have begun to attack again, and she hopes to find out how the Columbia travelled so far so fast — and hopes it will be useful against the Borg.
This trilogy was designed as the end of the story of the Borg — of course, it was later contradicted by Picard.
The crossover includes Ezri Dax on the Aventine, Captain Riker on the Titan, and Captain Picard on the Enterprise. In flashbacks we also see Captain Hernandez on the Columbia.
It’s about trying to figure out how to defeat your worst enemy, mutiny, and actions by people focused on escape inadvertently leading to untold suffering.
This is the 2nd time I’ve read it.
I’ve read 15 books by Mack. I previously reviewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Ring of Fire.
