Star Trek Annual #3, 4 & 5

{5/5} “‘And I must say you have surprised me, Dr. McCoy.’ ‘Oh? How’s that?’ ‘Spock never described you as a thoughtful man.’ ‘Can I quote your testimonial?'” — Sarek & McCoy

Star Trek Annual #3, 4 & 5 by Howard Weinstein & Michael Jan Friedman, published in 1992 – 1994

In “Homeworld” Sarek has returned to New Ketira for the celebration of their joining the Federation, something he helped come to pass. His old friend Lar’tok is dying but she has lived for 150 years — she is OK with it but then her successor refuses to submit to the blending.

In “To Walk the Night” Captain Pike beams down to a mining colony where people are behaving strangely and having the same dream. Meanwhile, Spock is having second thoughts about joining Starfleet.

In “The Dream Walkers” Spock has some sort of hallucination that it’s years ago when they’re encountering Balok. Then it happens to McCoy and others, at which point Spock suggests that someone is causing this to happen.

Sarek has a rare starring role in the 1st story, about different parts of a society disagreeing about how it should be led. The 2nd story features Dr. Boyce, Colt, Tyler, Scotty, and Number One — it deals with some unique aliens. The 3rd story features Janice Rand in a very nice way, showing us that she learned a thing or two under Kirk.

The artwork by Norm Dwyer and Arne Starr is OK, with some facial expressions slightly less than OK. The artwork by Gordon Purcell and Pablo Marcos is good, but it would have been better if they’d been able to use likenesses of all the characters from “The Cage.” The artwork by Carlos Garzon is great.

This is the 2nd time I’ve read it.

I’ve read 5 novels and a bunch of comic books by Weinstein. I previously reviewed Star Trek: The Peacekeeper.

I’ve read 19 of Friedman’s novels plus a bunch of comic books. I previously reviewed Star Trek: The Modala Imperative.
