Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
{4.5/5} “The final mission to save mankind has failed. The 70-mile-wide asteroid known commonly as ‘Matilda’ is set to collide with Earth in exactly three weeks’ time, and we’ll be bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage of our countdown to the end of days along with all your classic rock favorites.”
An asteroid is going to hit the Earth in 3 weeks and there’s nothing we can do about it. Dodge works in insurance — of course, most people aren’t coming in to work anymore, which means there are some opportunities in upper management. He’s not sure what to do — he doesn’t really want to party with his friends. Then he gets the idea to seek out his high school sweetheart. His neighbour Penny is coming along — Dodge has an idea how to get her on a plane so she can be with her family.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was released in 2012.
What would you do if you knew the world would be destroyed in 3 weeks? The question has been asked before, but this story is worth being told.
It starts out as a comedy and eventually switches to more of a drama — with a romance, of course.
There are lots of great songs on the soundtrack.
Steve Carell (Little Miss Sunshine) plays Dodge and Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice) plays Penny. Melanie Lynskey (Win Win), Rob Corddry (the TV show The Daily Show), and Jim O’Heir (the TV show Parks and Recreation) have small roles. There’s also a surprise guest star* near the end.
The movie was directed by Lorene Scafaria (writer of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist).
Spoiler alert
*Martin Sheen as Dodge’s dad.
