Horton Hears a Who!

{4/5} “How many times have I told you that the jungle is no place to act like a wild animal?”

Horton is an elephant  — he lives in the jungle, is kind to everyone, likes to take baths, and has an excellent memory. One day he finds a speck and is surprised to discover that there are tiny people living on it. No one believes Horton, though, and Kangaroo thinks Horton’s wild imagination will lead to anarchy. Horton decides he must take the speck to a safe place. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Whoville — who’s been talking to Horton — has trouble convincing his people that Horton is real.

Horton Hears a Who! was released in 2008. It’s an animated movie based on the book by Dr. Seuss.

It’s mostly for kids but if you watch it you won’t be cringing — it’s amusing and has a nice message. “A person’s a person no matter how small.”

The colourful animation will certainly remind you of Dr. Seuss’ artwork.

Jim Carrey brings his usual wittiness to the character of Horton.

The playful music is by John Powell (How to Train a Dragon).

Jim Carrey (The Majestic) voices Horton and Steve Carell (Despicable Me 2) voices the Mayor of Whoville. Carol Burnett (the TV show The Carol Burnett Show), Will Arnett (the TV show Arrested Development), Seth Rogen (Take This Waltz), and Amy Poehler (the TV show Parks and Recreation) also provide voices.

The movie was directed by Jimmy Hayward (Jonah Hex) and Steve Martino (Ice Age: Continental Drift).
