Agents of SHIELD (season 1)
{4.5/5} “We want you to tell us about the day after you died.”
Agent Coulson puts together a new team to deal with supernatural people and objects. Ward is a black ops specialist who’s used to working alone. May is also an experienced operative but for some reason doesn’t want to be in the field any more — she’s the pilot. Fitz and Simmons work together on the science and technology aspects that come up. Skye is a computer hacker and the newest member of the team.
Agents of SHIELD season 1 just ended. It’s a spinoff of the movie The Avengers.
I like how there are mysteries built in right away — particularly the fact that some people know something about Coulson’s recovery that he doesn’t. He thinks he recovered in Tahiti but apparently that’s not true.
You had to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier right when it came out for the full effect — the events of the movie tie in with the events of this show. The only other time I can think of that that happened is with The X-Files and its first movie.
There was one surprise late in the season that I didn’t particularly care for*, but other than that I thought they kicked it up a notch in the latter half (or so) of the season.
My favourite characters are Fitz and Simmons, who are both brilliant and nice.
The exciting music is by Bear McCreary (the TV show Battlestar Galactica).
Clark Gregg reprises his role of Coulson from The Avengers and Ming-Na Wen (the TV show Stargate Universe) plays May.
Brett Dalton (the TV movie Killing Lincoln) plays Ward and Chloe Bennet (the TV show Nashville) plays Skye. Iain De Caestecker (Up There) plays Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge (The Thompsons) plays Simmons.
A few people we already know from the Marvel universe show up. Cobie Smulders reprises her role of Agent Hill from The Avengers in the pilot. Jaimie Alexander (Thor: The Dark World) appears as Lady Sif. The ultimate guest star, Samuel L. Jackson (Jurassic Park) as Nick Fury, also drops by.
Ruth Negga (World War Z) plays Raina, one of their adversaries.
Guest stars include Ron Glass (the TV show Firefly), J. August Richards (the TV show Angel), and Amy Acker (Much Ado About Nothing). Bill Paxton (Aliens) shows up as an agent.
The show was created by Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers, writer of The Cabin in the Woods), Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen. The three of them were writers on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the TV show Dollhouse.
Spoiler alert
*I don’t particularly like it when someone** we thought for months was a good guy turns out to be a bad guy.
**Ward.
