Movies that are believable & ones that aren’t

Some movies have a central aspect that must be believable for the movie to work. Here are some examples. The list started with negative examples but I thought I’d include some positive ones as well for contrast.

Alien: Resurrection

  • Do you believe Ripley has been cloned? Yes.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

  • Do Batman and Superman have a reason to fight? There’s a reason, but it’s flimsy. (As has been pointed out elsewhere on the internet, they could have talked for a couple of minutes and worked things out.)

Edge of Tomorrow

  • Do you believe in Tom Cruise’s character’s transition from newbie to experienced soldier? Yes.

The Matrix

  • Do you believe that Neo is the One? Yes.

Star Trek: Nemesis

  • Do you believe that Shinzon is a clone of Picard? No. (Patrick Stewart should have played both Picard and Shinzon.)

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

  • Do you believe in Anakin and Padmé’s love story? No. (What does Padmé see in Anakin?)

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

  • Do you believe in Anakin’s transition to the Dark Side? No. (One minute he’s a Jedi and the next minute he’s killing kids.)

Upside Down

  • Do you believe in the love story between the two main characters? No. (The story needed to show us how they fell in love.)

Warm Bodies

  • Do you believe in the love story between the two main characters? Yes.
