Worlds of DS9: Cardassia / Andor
{4.5/5} “‘You know, Keiko, when you’re brought up to think carefully before you dare to utter even a single word, suddenly being free to say what you like is…’ He had to grope for the right words to express himself here. ‘Well, it’s terrifying,’ he said, at last.” (from Cardassia: The Lotus Flower)
Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Volume One, published in 2004
Cardassia: The Lotus Flower by Una McCormack — Keiko O’Brien has moved with her family to Cardassia to oversee a project to improve agriculture on the planet. Alon Ghemor, the castellan and Garak’s friend, is committed to doing things democratically but it’s not easy.
It’s about dealing with people who want to blow things up.
Keiko, Garak, Miles and Gul Macet are featured — as well as novel characters Alon Ghemor and Vedek Yevir.
Andor: Paradigm by Heather Jarman — Shar returns to Andor to help his mother, whose political position is at risk. Prynn Tenmei, his close friend on DS9, goes with him. While they are there, Shar’s mother is kidnapped.
It’s about being true to yourself, and the situation on Andor where their society knows that it will die within generations.
Novel characters Shar, Prynn, and Vretha are featured.
The Andorians are an interesting people, with much of their society invested in the marriage of 4 people to produce offspring.
This is the first in a miniseries where each book contains 2 short novels. It fits perfectly into the ongoing story of Deep Space Nine at this point.
I’ve read 10 books by McCormack. I previously reviewed Star Trek: Discovery — Wonderlands.
I’ve read 2 books by Jarman. I previously reviewed Star Trek: Voyager — String Theory: Evolution.
