A Bug’s Life

{4/5} “You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up.”

A Bug’s Life, released in 1998

Every year the ants harvest a bunch of food and leave it for the grasshoppers, who come and eat it and then leave. But this year Flik accidentally knocks over the pile of food and it all falls into the water. Hopper, the chief grasshopper, demands that they produce twice the amount of food at the end of the summer. Flik volunteers to leave the island to get help from other bugs against the grasshoppers, and the princess agrees.

This is one of Pixar’s first movies, so the animation style is simpler than it became later — but it’s still impressive.

I like how the ants cleverly use little things, like the Borrowers.

It’s about thinking outside the box and working together.

It’s not quite as funny as other Pixar movies, as much of the humour is from obvious puns.

There are “outtakes” during the credits.

Stars the voices of Dave Foley and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Directed by John Lasseter (Toy Story 2) and Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo). The soundtrack is from Randy Newman.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve seen it.
