Paper Girls (season 1)
{5/5} “‘If that really is future you up there, then maybe she can call someone.’ ‘Who’s she going to call? Time travel 911?'”
Paper Girls season 1, aired in 2022
Four girls who deliver newspapers in 1988 band together to fend off some boys. They experience something strange where the sky goes unusual colours, which they imagine is a nuclear war. They get taken somewhere by strange looking people who say strange things. When they get away from them, Erin takes them to her house but they run into a woman who isn’t her mother — it’s Erin but an older version of her. They’ve somehow travelled into the future and it’s 2019.
This show is about going through something extraordinary with new friends, and finding out startling things about your future selves.
The young actors do a terrific job, and the interactions between their characters are delightful.
The story doesn’t exactly come to a conclusion, but it’s still worth watching.
It’s based on a comic book, so I might read that.
Stars Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, and Ali Wong.
Created by Stephany Folsom (writer on Toy Story 4).
