The volume at movie theatres isn’t just loud, it’s absurdly loud. It’s so loud that it could hurt your ears. If you’re interested in protecting your ears, I recommend that you wear ear plugs. That’s what I did yesterday, and it worked very well — I could still hear everything and my ears didn’t hurt.
